A meeting centered on the work of Małgorzata Mirga-Tas will serve as a starting point for a discussion on how to approach contemporary art—and how to read it in the context of narratives about identity and visibility.
We will take a closer look at the artist’s visual language: intense colors, patchwork structures, and narrative scenes from the lives of Roma communities. Mirga-Tas creates works grounded in everyday experience, family archives, and community—constructing alternative images of Roma identity, which has often been represented from an “external” perspective.
The meeting will also provide an opportunity to reflect on the emancipatory potential of art: how Mirga-Tas’s practice functions as a form of reclaiming voice and agency—particularly in the context of Roma women’s experiences. Her artistic practice can be understood both as a critical gesture and as an attempt to build new narratives around community, memory, and belonging.
An important context for the meeting will also be the artist’s participation in the Venice Biennale in 2022, where, as the first Roma artist to represent Poland, she transformed the national pavilion into a narrative about the history and culture of Roma people.
