Presented as part of the exhibition All The Diamonds, Alina Ușurelu’s installation creates an environment for collective action, inviting the audience to reenact the gesture of washing clothes together.
The starting point for the work is the artist’s personal memory of washing clothes in a river — an activity deeply rooted in communal experience and historically assigned to women. Ușurelu reconstructs the process of washing her father’s shirts. There are 35 of them — the same age the artist was when she created the work. She follows a set of instructions that she continuously transforms and opens up to new meanings. Through embodied memory and the repetition of gestures, Ușurelu enters into dialogue with her own roots, transforming an everyday activity into a performative act.
The artist proposes a contemporary reading of traditional practices as forms of coexistence and collaboration. By inviting the audience to participate, she creates a temporary and safe space for collective work — freed from fixed hierarchies and gender roles. Water becomes a connecting medium here: a pretext for encounter, exchange of experiences and stories, as well as a carrier of memory that is activated through action.
The work was created within the project Rains, Rivers, Streams. Produced by the Developing Art Association and co-funded by AFCN – Administration of the National Cultural Fund.
