Ukraine’s resistance against Russia’s war of aggression and the full-scale invasion of 2022 has brought together people from around the world in the fight for freedom and against blatant breaches of human rights and international law. It has also forced many of Ukrainian citizens, including a significant number of artists, to relocate around the world, assigning them the new role, of cultural ambassadors of the country at war.
Despite the challenges of the historical circumstances, the exhibition showcases the resilience of civil society and common values, providing a chance to see how common and individual identities are being shaped. The younger generation of Ukrainian artists is playing a vital role in this transformation, questioning and rewriting narratives, spreading the word and uniting various voices to imagine the coming return of military-seized territories and the process of reintegration.
The artists, along with Ukrainian society in general, are on the way now. Therefore, the central theme of the exhibition is the journey of returning home and the reclamation of one’s voice, lands and heritage. The exhibition discovers dominant political narratives concealing individual stories and speaks about disappearance in landscape alongside the overwhelming historic events. This overarching narrative ties together the artworks, creating a cohesive message of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
