In her works, Gwendolyn Lootens explores the relationship between gestures, emotions and abstract images. Repeated movements: rolling, rubbing, holding still, ironing, moving, squeezing-using everyday materials (tape, oil, flour, magnets, dishes, string)-combine into sequences, short abstract video works that the artist calls “moving moments.” In a musical dialogue with Saif Al-Qaissy, using light, sound and foodstuffs, the artist creates an immersive experience that is both alien and familiar. Forming islands that resemble the contours of continents and countries, they prompt reflection on the ever-changing nature of the geographic and geopolitical environment, suggesting a vision of a fluid world without borders. The sound, balancing between noise and percussion, offers a physical, penetrating experience reminiscent of a heartbeat, inviting the audience to feel collectively in motion.
