Everything Must Change for Everything to Remain the Same
23.09.2023 - ∞
Wojciech Fangor, M17

The exhibition features selected pieces from the collection of Sylwia and Piotr Krupa, which constitutes the symbolic core of the Krupa Art Foundation.

The title is taken from Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s Leopard, a novel that tells the story of great social, cultural and political changes at the dawn of modernity. Although The Leopard is set in Italy in the second half of the 19th century, Lampedusa’s thought is universal and topical. Change is the organising principle of modern reality. It finds expression in art; it is a special mirror that helps us to find ourselves in the image of reality.

The oldest works in the Krupa Collection were created shortly after the end of the Second World War, the most recent ones are by artists working today. The narrative of the exhibition reflects the multifaceted nature of the collection, created in the belief that diversity is the driving force of culture. The collection is a unique meeting space between works representing different attitudes, points of view and ways of representing the world. The exhibition is structured in a similar way. Historical and recent works engage in symbolic dialogue with each other because art always exists in the present, regardless of when a particular piece was made. It is in the present that the discourse of art resounds in the consciousness of the audience. Therefore, we let the works talk for themselves – each of them tells its own story, but together they weave a common narrative. Its theme is the Collection conceived as a kind of text, made up of statements formulated in a number of artistic idioms that together form the universal language of art – a special language that serves to describe our experience, both individually and collectively, as society. It is also a story about the future. Art is constantly changing to show that which remains the same, creative and human, in a world of permanent transformation.
