FOCUS is an exhibition presenting selected works recently acquired for the collection of Sylwia and Piotr Krupa, the majority of which were created over the past few years.
The exhibition concentrates on art that is acutely contemporary—produced here and now, in a world that is constantly accelerating, transforming, and repeatedly eluding clear-cut diagnoses. The contemporary art scene unfolds along multiple trajectories, and the richness of its themes and practices makes it impossible to identify a single, shared current.
The works on view reflect both pressing political phenomena and the intimate experiences of artistic practitioners. While the exhibition is grounded in the most recent tendencies, it also opens a dialogue with classics of the second half of the twentieth century, revealing the enduring persistence of certain gestures and ideas.
Works by nearly fifty artists are presented across two floors of the Krupa Art Foundation’s headquarters, arranged within five thematic frames: Double Exposure, focused on self-observation and the effect of double vision that emerges when we attempt to see through someone else’s eyes; Frontline, presenting testimonies of oppression, conflict, and resistance; Weaving, exploring how the history of weaving textiles has become entangled with the logic of binary code; Interferences, where the absence of clear contours suggests dystopian imaginaries; and Close-up, dedicated to intimacy.
This third presentation of the collection also marks another stage in the ongoing work of interpreting its holdings. Following the dialogue between historical and contemporary works curated by Stach Szabłowski (2023), and the exceptional edition curated by children (2024), the curatorial role is now assumed by the Foundation’s curatorial team together with the collector, Sylwia Krupa. FOCUS centres on relationships—between the institution and the collection, between the collector and the artwork, and between the collection and those who co-create it: artistic practitioners, other agents of the art world, and the contexts in which the works are produced and circulated. The exhibition reflects on perspective and on the act of looking at dispersed forms of artistic expression in higher resolution.
FOCUS is an attempt to adjust the clarity of our distracted attention, sharpening it on significant fragments of reality that art brings into the field of vision.
